We went from ‘Will You’ to ‘I Do’—in two months
From a surprise proposal in Italy to a wedding on Whidbey Island in two months.
The Proposal
Ring
I had always imagined designing the engagement ring that I’d be giving my would-be wife someday. I started a year before the proposal date because I wasn’t sure which manufacturer I was choosing and therefore, did not know about the the production time of the ring. I ended up finding an online retailer who produces custom rings, Olive Ave Jewelry, and could not have been more pleased with the outcome. I’m not quite sure their normal process involves getting pseudo CAD layouts done in illustrator, but they were more than happy to accommodate my enthusiastic requests, haha.
International proposal planner extraordinaire
Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy
This was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to plan. In addition to designing the ring, I spent many early mornings and late nights researching ideas, looking at venues on Google Earth, and contacting Italian businesses and photographers through email and WhatsApp, despite the language barrier and twelve-hour time difference.
As a cover, I planned for us to walk with a photographer along this scenic route which led from the top of the town, down to the beach. I told Cara about it the night before, theming it as “a day in Positano” because “I know I’m a brat when it comes to taking pictures and I didn’t want to risk that for this trip”. So then, once we got down to the beach I would attempt to propose and try to not stumble all over my words. 😅
It turned out pretty great. We even ended up having an audience of bystanders who clapped once we were done. And of course, there were some hiccups along the way as with anything, but when all was said and done, I—rather, we—couldn’t have been happier.
